KPMG Faces the Future with Cloud ERP
Driving Efficiency, Scalability, and Compliance
Building a Future-Focused Organization
KPMG’s Federal Practice, which provides auditing, advisory, and Tax-EVS services to U.S. government agencies and contractors, has long relied on Deltek Costpoint ERP to manage complex financial operations and maintain compliance with stringent government regulations.
Well known for helping federal agencies modernize, streamline, and innovate, KPMG recognized the importance of bringing that same spirit of transformation to its own internal operations. By migrating from Costpoint on-premise to Costpoint in the cloud, KPMG aimed to harness the agility, scalability, and digital modernization they deliver to clients—while also elevating their cybersecurity posture and compliance readiness.
Leveraging a FedRAMP-compliant cloud environment, KPMG ensures their data is protected by industry-leading security standards and is always audit-ready, positioning their federal practice to meet evolving regulatory demands and deliver exceptional value in a rapidly changing landscape.
Modernizing Along with Deltek Costpoint
Since 2015, KPMG has been leveraging Deltek Costpoint as the backbone for its federal practice, managing everything from general ledger and expenses to timesheets and engagement artifacts.
Within that organization is Saby Makkar, Sr. Director, Digital Nexus at KPMG. Saby’s team on KPMG’s Federal Practice side needed a system that was able to handle its expenses, its timesheets, everything that an ERP system does.
“I realized the amount of effort that me and my team, which is a small team on the federal practice, was putting into the finance and accounting side of everything,” Makkar said. He knew it was time to modernize. “I want to use my team efficiently.”
Initially, this was an on-premises installation, and when it came time to modernize, Makkar knew that moving to the cloud would be a worthwhile effort. “We were moving data centers, and I thought, do we upgrade servers or go to the cloud? Best of breed, future-proof, and let the team focus on value-add work. When we looked at the cost of cloud versus on-premises, we would actually go net positive. It was a no-brainer.”
The migration was a carefully planned effort involving KPMG’s IT and finance teams along side Deltek Consulting. After analyzing the total cost of ownership and determining that cloud hosting would be cost-neutral or even net positive, KPMG committed to the transition.
Challenges such as data conversion and reporting complexities were successfully handled with the help of Deltek’s team of experts. “By using Deltek Consulting on one side and having a partnership trifecta between the IT organization, finance, and accounting on the other side, we made sure we would have a positive outcome.”
Time Savings and Agility Gains
The successful migration to cloud hosting allowed KPMG to gain scalability and efficiency, eliminating the need for extensive on-premises server maintenance and creating more time for its IT team to focus on higher-value work.
“If I can leverage a partner like Deltek to take care of the security and availability of my ERP data, so my team can focus on more strategic tasks, it generally helps our team to think ahead rather than just kind of stay in the grind of what happens with maintaining servers. And that was one of the purposes of us going to the cloud.”
Successfully moving Costpoint into Deltek’s Cloud also provides KPMG with peace of mind through advanced cybersecurity compliance benefits. Costpoint in Deltek’s GovCon Cloud Moderate (GCCM) environment delivers FedRAMP Moderate Equivalency. It’s also listed on the FedRAMP Marketplace, which is a requirement for companies seeking CMMC Level 2 & 3 compliance and storing CUI in the cloud. Additionally, Costpoint GCCM supports export-controlled ITAR data compliance requirements with US-only data centers and personnel ensuring no hidden surprises when it comes to compliance assessments. This advantage allows KPMG to compete for highly valuable DoD contracts and demonstrate a commitment to security. “When we did this migration to the cloud, we chose Costpoint GCCM because of its security features. Having a partner in cloud to take care of security vulnerabilities frees our team to focus on new modules and even Dela AI. That was one of the purposes of going to the cloud.”
KPMG’s cloud-based ERP system not only helps keep their data secure and their processes future-ready, but it integrates with their other Deltek solutions to give them clarity and control across their entire federal project lifecycle. They are also leveraging other Deltek platforms such as the Deltek GovWin IQ application to connect pursuit intelligence from IQ directly to Costpoint for faster, more informed bids.
Thinking Ahead to What Comes Next
Ultimately, Makkar said, the efficiency gains and security of a future-proofed cloud installation give his team more time to focus on the important work of serving their federal customers.
“This endeavor helps us best serve our clients. Upgrading the server doesn't help them. But moving to the cloud and on to FedRAMP opens us up to focus on what's next. Once we provide new features for our clients and we keep them up to date, those are the items that help and make it easier for them.”
With Deltek Costpoint in the GCCM cloud, KPMG is positioned to meet the growing demands of its federal clients while maintaining the highest standards of cybersecurity and compliance. By eliminating the burden of on-premises maintenance and adopting a platform built for the future, KPMG has gained the speed, clarity, and control needed to deliver exceptional value in a rapidly evolving federal landscape.
