Unifying Project Data in a Single Source of Truth
SOLVING THE TOUGHEST NATIONAL SECURITY CHALLENGES
With a credo to protect and promote freedom around the globe, Peraton is committed to making a difference and doing the “can't be done.”
Based in Reston, Virginia, Peraton operates within the nexus of world-class talent, government customers and global access. As a national security company fueled by technology, Peraton has become the partner of choice for many of the nation’s most vital and innovative organizations.
“When we started in 2017, we were a fairly niche operation with a couple of thousand employees,” said Eric Ruscheinski, Peraton Vice President, Enterprise Applications and Analytics. “Fast forward five years, and we now employ more than 17,000 people with earnings close to $7 billion in annual revenue.”
By taking a strategic approach to business mergers, acquisitions and technology integration, Peraton has evolved substantially as a competitor and expanded its services portfolio to provide more holistic, continuous solutions and technologies for its customers.“Our end-to-end capabilities enable us to develop new to improve our national defense, provide intelligence and monitoring support for border patrol, and even build, deploy and track satellites for NASA,” said Eric. “And it’s all driven by high-quality data analytics.”
The company works closely with the Intelligence Community to enhance cybersecurity and provide the U.S. armed forces and DoD agencies with the analytics and communications systems they need to make faster, more tactical decisions at the speed of the need—both at home and overseas.
CONNECTING A UNIVERSE OF DEFENSE PROJECTS
As recent global events have demonstrated, national security isn’t limited to military responses on a physical battlefield, but economic stability, social discourse and digital systems can be targets, too. To effectively address the problem, everyone needs to work from the same single source of truth.
“We acquired a lot of systems, processes and workflow templates,” said Eric. “But having everyone work from disconnected platforms wasn’t sustainable. We had to find a partner to help us unify our project data across the business.”
With its customers and organizations working from different platforms, such as SAP and Microsoft Dynamics, Peraton identified Deltek’s Government Contracting products as the right solution to consolidate its project data and operations.
“We needed to be able to move data between our systems quickly and seamlessly,” said Eric. “And with Costpoint, PPM and TIPQA, we can connect our financial, project management, legal and contract teams on a standardized platform—helping them respond to inquiries faster while improving auditability.”
UNLOCKING NEW LEVELS OF EFFICIENCY AND INSIGHT
In one recent acquisition, Peraton inherited a complex SAP environment and numerous legacy Costpoint instances, but with help from Deltek, it was able to unify a multi-billion dollar business onto a single platform.
“It was a lot of data mapping, scripting, license management and integration work,” said Eric. “But, in just eight months, we were able to consolidate everything and unlock a single source of truth for project information.”
The importance of this type of consolidation can’t be overstated. As Peraton’s customers rely heavily on its secure insights to aid split-second decision-making—such as when fighting and coordinating missions overseas—speed of insight is essential. And this improved dramatically by having everything available in one place.
“We integrated our PPM and Costpoint solutions with our data warehouse and corporate analytics platform to give everyone real-time access to quality data,” said Eric. “We now manage $600 million a year through Deltek Costpoint and Deltek PPM solutions (such as Cobra, Open Plan and PM Compass), and our clients can access reports, metrics and KPI data faster than ever.”
A MORE EFFICIENT, CONNECTED FUTURE FOR ALL
In addition to helping the company stay adaptive as national threats become more complex and unpredictable, Peraton is also using Deltek to reduce the time and costs associated with infrastructure management and operations.
“We no longer have to manage different licenses and systems, which our financial team certainly appreciates,” said Eric. “Because everything is virtualized and accessible in one place, we don’t have to build and share resources manually over email. We’ve never been so nimble—and our customers feel that, too.”
As for the future, Peraton and Deltek are working closely on every new merger and acquisition to help the teams and customers stay connected and informed—and by extension, keep the nation secure.
“The Deltek Global Consulting and licensing teams are the first people we call when we do an acquisition,” said Eric. “Together, we map the separate data and address any niche coding and product requirements. If the niche expertise isn’t available in-house, we can contact Deltek’s business partners for help. It’s a one-stop-shop relationship and we can always get the answers we need.”
