Quarterly Town Hall Recap (Part 1): Deltek PIM’s Smart Journey and How You Can Play a Role
There are so many exciting things happening in the Deltek PIM world. Ultimately, we are striving to make the system easier to navigate and easier to use. We discussed this very topic at the most recent Deltek PIM Customer Town Hall, including PIM’s smart journey to empower your users to do more in less time along with how you can play a pivotal role in PIM’s development.
This post includes a recap of the town hall. For full details, you can watch it on demand at the link below.

Deltek PIM Smart: The Journey Continues
Deltek PIM’s smart initiative focuses on simplifying processes, making the system easier to use and introducing the beginnings of automation. At the heart of this initiative is you, our users.
The last release (20.0) introduced two features that catapulted the smart journey. We introduced a new easier-to-use email publishing tool, including a new user interface and advanced features. That release also introduced a new user interface for the smart document management system (DMS). The DMS now provides an updated and modern user interface without sacrificing the unmatched searching power of PIM.>
Now let’s explore what’s coming in the next.
Document Publishing Wizard
Available for everyone in the next release (20.1), a new and improved document publishing tool will make it even easier to upload your documents into PIM. As with the smart features highlighted in the last release, the publishing tool will include a new user interface.
Local File Management
Local File Management (LFM) will be replacing the legacy Working Files, seamlessly allowing you to check out a document, make appropriate changes and check it back in. This is a major step towards making Deltek PIM compatible on all modern browsers.
In the next release (20.1), this feature will be available first to limited adopters (LA) who are hosting their Deltek PIM solution on premise. If you are interested in participating in this LA program, reach out to your Account Manager. Stay tuned for more information on this particular feature.
Universal Document Control
The “next big thing” for Deltek PIM is what we’re calling Universal Document Control (UDC), which will enable Deltek PIM to index documents that reside in your network directories (AKA, yellow folders). While those documents will still live and are controlled on your network, all of that document data will now searchable from within Deltek PIM. This provides one place to access total information.
The document publishing wizard will make it even easier to migrate those documents from the network directory into the DMS, where the same power of PIM comes into play providing full audit trails, version control and the use of workflows.>
Just like Local File Management above, this feature will be available first to limited adopters (LA) who are hosting their Deltek PIM solution on premise. In addition, LAs must simultaneously participate in the LFM LA program. If you are interested in participating in this LA program, reach out to your Account Manager. Stay tuned for more information on this particular feature.
While these ‘smart’ changes are really exciting, it will do nothing for your business if your employees don’t know how to use these new features. The Deltek University team is working alongside product development to create training resources to enable you to learn about the new and exciting features, as well as train your staff in its use.
The Deltek University team also is looking to establish a curriculum council with you. Meeting quarterly, we would like to discuss the type of content that is useful to your teams and the most effective learning approaches (i.e., virtual live classes, self-pace material). If you are interested in participating, reach out to DLZPIM@deltek.com.
Customer Experience: You Ask, We Listen
All of this progress within Deltek PIM would not be possible without your direct feedback.
Deltek sends out pulse surveys to our customers throughout the year and Vice President of Customer Care Olive Moore personally reads and responds to every survey response. Your feedback is shared with our CEO and executive team, and future decisions of the Deltek PIM product is driven by you.
For example, you asked for a better user interface. We began delivering on that in the 19.2 release in late 2019 and continue to make improvements with each subsequent release. You asked for cross-browser capability. We will begin delivering on that in 2020 (listen to Director of Product Management Nick Nieder’s update in the November Deltek PIM Customer Town Hall on demand for more details). You asked for better support. We have made incredible strides in our efforts and hope to continue that trajectory.
The bottom line is, we want to hear from you. So the next time you receive a survey, please provide your feedback (the good, the bad and the ugly). We’re counting on you to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Deltek PIM.
