Architecture and Engineering Consulting Firm Drives Company-Wide Visibility with Deltek Vision�
The Challenge
For over 50 years, the Ontario-based Thompson Rosemount Group (TRG) has built a strong reputation for solving the architectural and engineering challenges of its clients, from health care and municipal infrastructure to water resources and transportation. With over 100 employees across four offices, TRG has seen marked growth over the past 15 years — however, their legacy Wind2 accounting system was unable to keep up.
"We were recognizing the shortcomings of the solution as we grew the business. We needed better reporting, more business process automation, and the ability to really break down the numbers of our business by discipline and by project," said Bill Knight, Vice President and Chief Engineer for TRG. "We were unable to manage budgets and projects the way we wanted. It was time for a change."
The Solution
The TRG team explored several options to replace their aging system and quickly recognized the value of Deltek Vision.
Specifically designed for professional services firms, Deltek Vision is a modular solution that automates and integrates the planning, tracking, and administration of both resources and projects. TRG management chose Vision based on its custom reporting capabilities and standard features like electronic time reporting and project accounting. "The amount of time we're saving on manual time sheets alone is remarkable," Knight continued. "Even standard features are making a big difference."
Working closely with award-winning Deltek partner Kennedy Vomberg, TRG went from contract to go-live in just six months. The implementation process included data conversion from Wind2 to Vision and the implementation of the time and expense and accounting modules. "The data conversion process was the most involved part of the implementation, and Kennedy Vomberg helped us every step of the way," Knight said. "While the conversion was ongoing, we were anxiously waiting to take advantage of Vision's reporting features, in addition to the financial management capabilities. As soon as we started using the reporting features, we were instantly impressed."
As part of the implementation, management dashboards were created for project managers that allow them to quickly access the status of any of their current projects, as well as produce reports for management and clients.
The Benefit
Today, TRG uses Vision to run their back-office accounting processes and to produce and manage budget information by project, discipline, department, or enterprise-wide, depending on the need.
Vision automates multiple processes within TRG including invoicing, monthly reporting, general ledger management, and time keeping. With Vision integrating the entire business together, TRG management has an accurate and timely view of all of their projects and the company as a whole. "Understanding where we are relative to our projects has never been easier," Knight continued. "We now have much greater insight into project status and company performance which enables us to make smart decisions very quickly." As part of their initiative to better understand their business, TRG continuously refines dashboards and reports for every department and discipline across its four offices.
From stronger client relationships to betterinformed management, Vision's ripple effect is felt across the organization. "We've got a very good handle on where we are at any given moment, on many levels," Knight concluded. "Vision gave us exactly what we were looking for, and we are very excited to roll out resource planning and project management modules in the very near future."
